Inconsistent and weak Wi-Fi signal has now become one of the most common problems that we, as the consumer, encounter at home. If you’re one of the people who’s searching for an easy fix for this problem, then you’re in luck. We listed down some of the fastest, easiest, and more budget-friendly affordable fixes to improve your Wi-Fi connection and signal at home.
Slow Wi-Fi?
If you’re reading this, then you’ve probably suffered or are suffering from slow Wi-Fi connectivity. Most people would seek Google help with their concerns by typing questions why is my wifi so slow? why is my wifi so bad? why is my phone keeps disconnecting on my wifi? and more. There’s no direct answer to these questions since the cause of poor Wi-Fi signal varies greatly from software to software, hardware to hardware, and device to device. A lot of factors must be looked upon and considered so you can pinpoint the cause of your Wi-Fi problems.
Before we can proceed with any remedies for your Wi-Fi woes, we first need to understand the problem we are facing. In this article, we will be focusing on improving the Wi-Fi signal of your wireless router. This is, of course, considering that there are no problems with your internet service provider and on your devices such as smartphones, laptops, desktops, smart TVs, smartwatches, and more.
How to Improve Wi-Fi Connection and Signal at Home
Here are 6 different ways to improve your Wi-Fi signal and connection at home:
Configure Wireless Router Settings
In most cases, a couple of changes on your router settings configuration can drastically improve the Wi-Fi connection and signal in your home. To access the device settings of your router provided by your internet service provider, simply follow these steps:
- Open an Internet Browser such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, etc.
- On the address bar, type 192.168.1.1. Otherwise, check the IP address of your router by looking at its specification label.
It’s usually printed on your routers’ label or underneath it. If it has a different admin IP port, then use that instead. Otherwise, call your ISP’s customer service for assistance. - Proceed to Wi-Fi settings and look for Wireless Mode and Channel Width. Make sure that these two settings are set to all letters available and to the highest possible number for the Channel Width.
If you have a dual-band wireless router, make sure to do the same for the 5GHz Wi-FI band settings. - Make sure there’s no existing bandwidth limitation. To do so, make sure that the Maximum Downlink and Uplink are set to 0.
- Additionally, you also need to configure the advanced settings. Don’t worry, it’s not as complex as it sounds. All you have to do is look for the Advance settings of your Wi-Fi. On the advanced settings, make sure to enable both Beamforming and Mu-MIMO.
And while at it, also make sure that the Wi-Fi allotted power is set to 100%. In some routers, it is called RF Output Power or Radio Frequency Output Power. Anything less than 100% indicates that your router is not set to perform to its maximum output.
Place your wireless router in a more suitable location
One of the common misconceptions that most people believe is that a single wireless router is enough for a standard size home. Another is that the ones provided by their ISPs are enough for their needs. That’s actually true and false, it’s true for some but not for others because all of that depends on certain factors. If you reside in a small house that has one living room, one bedroom, one kitchen, and one bathroom, then the wireless router provided by your ISP should suffice for your wireless needs. However, if you live in a neighborhood where houses are literally attached next to each other, then you need to consider the interferences of other wireless devices that can greatly affect your Wi-Fi connectivity.

So for this method, relocating your wireless router can greatly improve your Wi-Fi signal at home. Ideally, the best place to put your wireless router is at the center of your house. You also need to understand that wireless routers can only cover a certain radius. Obstructions such as walls, other wireless devices, etc can greatly affect your Wi-Fi connection. So consider the graph below:
On the image above, you would ideally want to place your router on the second-floor stairs area. Doing so will provide a Wi-Fi signal for your living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. Unfortunately, there will be dead spots. Mostly on the basement, garage, and attic. If you want to fully cover your house with a Wi-Fi signal eliminating any dead zones, then we will tackle that in a later portion of the article.
DIY Wi-Fi boosting methods
If putting your wireless router in a different location is not possible for you and you don’t want to spend anything on a new router or other solutions, here’s a DIY signal booster trick that might just be the right one for you.
For this DIY Wi-Fi signal booster technique, all your need is a carton board and a roll of aluminum foil:
- Cover your carton board with aluminum foil all over and make sure that the most reflective surface is the outer surface. Also, make sure that you cover your carton board with 2 layers of aluminum foil.
- Once done, adjust the shape of your board. Ideally, you want a semi concave shape or a dome.
- Once the board is shaped to your ideal shape, place it behind your wireless router.
- Adjust the position facing the path where your need a stronger Wi-Fi signal.
Ideally, it should look like this.
Studies have shown that this DIY trick actually improves your Wi-Fi signal at home. You can learn more about there on the video below:
On the said video, you can also adjust your board to better provide Wi-Fi signal on certain areas of your home by simply changing the position and shape of your aluminum foil-covered board.
Using Wi-Fi extenders/repeaters
Now, if you need a better solution since all of the ones we mentioned above don’t work for you, then you might need to consider spending a couple of bucks. Purchasing Wi-Fi extenders or repeaters are usually the ultimate solution for your Wi-Fi needs. Most especially if you live in a large house like a mansion or castle since there’s not a single wireless router powerful enough to cover acres of land area. In this case, you will need devices that connect to your main wireless router and emits its own RF signal in a form of a Wi-Fi repeater extending the Wi-Fi signal of your main wireless router.
Consider the image above, if your wireless router is placed next to a wall that is way off the center of your home, then a Wi-Fi extender would be a cheap solution for your dead spots area. As the name suggests, Wi-Fi extenders connect to your router wirelessly, strengthening and expanding its signal to every corner of the home โ even to those, hard-to-reach spots, such as bathrooms, balconies, bedrooms. This ensures an increased coverage of reliable and high-speed Internet for devices such as notebooks, tablets, smartphones, game consoles, and Smart TVs.
You can even use multiple extenders to completely cover your household.

Using Mesh Wi-Fi home system setup
Last but not least and the most expensive solution in improving your Wi-Fi signal at home is using a Mesh Wi-Fi home system setup.
What is Mesh Wi-Fi Network?
A Mesh Wi-Fi Network is basically a group of wireless router devices that act as a single Wi-Fi network/LAN; so there are multiple sources of Wi-Fi around your house, instead of just a single router. These additional Wi-Fi sources are calledย points or nodes and they all work together to extend your Wi-Fi signal to your whole home. How it basically works is that one node/point connects to your home router via Ethernet cable while the rest of the nodes are placed around your home to where you need Wi-Fi coverage.

With Mesh Wi-Fi, you donโt have to manually switch to another network, the nodes/points automatically keep you connected to the same Wi-Fi SSID giving you seamless coverage everywhere.
If you plan to upgrade your home Wi-Fi system to a Mesh network, we recommend checking out theย Huawei WiFi AX3 featuringย Gigahome Quad-Core andย Wi-Fi 6 Plus.
