With more and more personal video capture devices such as action cameras, drones and of course, mobile phones empowering consumers to be content creators, the need for dependable storage is a big market and is vastly competitive. There’s a huge lot of options out there and it gets easily tough to find which one you need for your specific device. Well-known brands do have an easier standing out and but with more users comes the need to impress more people and thankfully Kingston has had a great history of dependability under their belt. Today we’re going to be taking a look at Kingston’s latest addition to the Gold Series of microSD cards for mobile devices targeted for 4K video recording specifically for action cameras and drones.
To fully test out the device, we’re testing it together with the Kingston MobileLite Duo 3C; a multi-interface card reader rated for USB3.1 and has both an USB Type-A (the ones you normally see) and USB Type-C, which is the growing standard right now thanks to its reversible design amongst other things. This design allows the MobileLite Duo 3C to be used on a lot of devices including newer flagship phones and notebooks that only feature USB Type-C ports.
Features
- Great performance to keep up with your adventures
- Compatible with microSDHC and microSDXC host devices
- Rugged: tested to be waterproof1, shock and vibration proof2, X-ray proof3 and temperature proof4
- Available in multiple capacities to suit your needs
Closer Look
Kingston ships both the memory card and card reader in their signature blister packaging. As with most high-end Kingston products, the Gold Series microSD card receives a black packaging with gold print to signify its premium nature. The MobileLite Duo 3C joins the mainstream series and has a white packaging.
The Kingston Gold Series microSD card comes in packages with just the card itself and another one with an SD card adapter. The card itself is your standard microSD form factor with gold prints highlighting the capacity and technology of the product.
The MobileLite Duo 3C is a refinement of the previous generation of card readers from Kingston. Now featuring a metallic body and a improved finish, the MobileLite Duo 3C also comes with a string to keep the cap from getting lost.
The cap covers the card slot as well as the Type-C connector. Note that in this picture we didn’t insert the card all the way through. With a card in place, the MobileLite Duo 3C serves basically as a flash drive with whatever capacity card you have inserted.
User Experience & Conclusion
Kingston has a couple of other storage solutions for content creators like the red series of cards that feature up to 80MB/s write speeds. That serves nicely for sports photography or those looking for impressive burst performance and is specifically the reason why we have it on our Sony A6000 system. For our video recordings though, we have the LG G6 sporting the Kingston Gold Series 64GB U3 microSD card for 4K recording. The good thing about it is that thanks to the MobileLite Duo 3C, it natively connects to the LG G6’s Type-C interface so I can choose to use a dual-SIM on my phone.
As advertised, the Kingston Gold series microSD U3 card performs within specifications with a 95MB peak read speed and 45MB/s write speeds. For modern consumer devices this is plenty of performance even for 4K and most phones will be able to utilize the write speeds to properly record 4K videos without choking.
Pricing is very compelling for the Kingston Gold Series microSD U3 card starting at $12 for the 16GB version, 22$ for the 32GB and 50$ for the 64GB we tested today. The choice is easily narrowed down to what function you primarily use your card for and we feel 32GB and 64GB are the ideal storage capacities for people who record 4K videos. At this range the 64GB option is a bit on the pricey side but Kingston does sweeten the deal with a SD card adapter and a lifetime warranty.
If you’re looking for a reliable storage solution for your video capture, the Kingston Gold series microSD UHS-I Class 3 cards are perfect for the job if you mostly focus on video recording. Couple it with a MobileLite Duo 3C card reader and you get a highly versatile storage option for your phone that you can instantly transfer to any PC.
Kingston backs the Gold Series microSD UHS-I Class 3 memory card with a limited lifetime warranty and the MobileLite Duo 3C with a 2-year warranty.
