Intel recently held a press briefing in preparation for Computex regarding their desktop business. Lisa Graff, Vice President and General Manager of Desktop Client Platforms, delivered some news on what to expect from Intel in the near future.
Despite claims of Intel moving away from the desktop, Graff reaffirms that Intel is fully committed to its core business highlighting its attempt at reinventing the way people interact with their desktops as well as improving user experience and performance.
The PC is not Dead
Growth in sales in Q1 2014 confirms that there is still a big demand for PC and with the rapid development in AIO technology and SFF PCs, the desktop is seeing application in far more diverse commercial scenarios than ever before.
With the imminent standardization of 4K UltraHD resolution, Intel is paving the way to faster adoption of 4K devices collaborating with Samsung to deliver affordable 4K AIO powered by Intel Core processors with Intel HD Graphics.
Moving over to more enthusiast-oriented discussion, Intel highlights the projected growth of hardware and games sales in the next few years and points out League of Legends as one of the main drivers of the boom in PC gaming with LoL having 27 million global active users daily.
Happy Birthday Pentium!
Intel is also announcing the 20th anniversary of the Pentium brand of processors and to celebrate this occasion, Intel will be releasing the Pentium Anniversary Edition, a K-series unlocked dual-core processor which is essentially an unlocked version of the existing Haswell Pentium currently in the market.
Devil’s Canyon
When Intel unveiled the Haswell refresh (up until retail availability) the high-end 4790K and 4690K were missing. This has led to speculations that Intel will be releasing them under the Devils Canyon codename and that ultimately turned out to be true as the new i7-4790K will be available this June.
The i7-4790K will feature 4.0 GHz base frequency on ALL CORES and a Boost frequency of 4.4Ghz. This will be Intel’s first quad-core processor to feature 4Ghz on all 4 cores. More details below:
- 4 Cores, 8 Threads
- Fully unlocked for performance tuning
- Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0
- Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology
- Intel® HD Graphics 4600 (1250 MHz)
- Supports LGA 1150 socket
- 8 MB Intel® Smart Cache
- 2 channel DDR3-1600 memory support
- 16 PCI Express* 3.0 lanes
- Intel® AVX and AES
- SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 instructions
In the issue of heat, Devil’s Canyon will still be using TIM underneath the IHS but this IHS will be what Intel refers to as Next-Generation Polymer Thermal Interface Material or NGPTIM. Devils Canyon will be seen flexing its muscles during Computex in an overclocking show so any questions regarding thermal performance and maximum clocks were best left for that event.
Intel schedules the release of Devil’s Canyon processors this June and will be compatible with both Z97 and Z87 processors despite some board makers claiming lack of support. Z97 will also be supporting the upcoming 5th-gen Core processors codenamed Broadwell. Broadwell will not be compatible with the 8-series chipset.
More info will hopefully be revealed at Computex and we will bring you any breaking news regarding this release when they become available.

I can’t wait for Skylake and Broadwell-E 🙂 Think 2016 I’ll buy a new mobo, chip and RAM and let my dad have my 3770k set up 😀 Then I can retire the i7 950 rig 🙂
I really don’t need the processing power so I’m happily hoping for a high-efficiency quad-core with a consumption of less than 90W. I really dream of putting together a decent gaming rig that sucks just below 250w of power on max load.
nice 😀 I should do that too but I really want the performance 😀
