In defense of the show, I just came out from 1.5 hours of struggling with Windows 8.1 trying to fix the screen display. My annoyance may have prevented me from enjoying this show.
In any case, Selector Infected Wixoss is about a certain card game our main character, Ruuko, gets involved in at the advise of her brother. She doesn’t have any friends, nor does she actually want one, much to her grandmother’s worries. So naturally her older brother gives her a starter pack to this Wixoss card game that’s popular among girls of her age.
But lo and behold, the starter pack she has contains a peculiar card.
Yep, the card is alive. Although at this point, all the card does is purr, make annoying sounds, and shout, “Battle!”
But what is up with this game and this special card? Thankfully, another Wixoss gamer comes along, fishes Ruuko out, and explains things to her.
Simply put, the girls who receive this special cards that have a mind of their own are the chosen ones set to battle each other in order to grow their card avatar. Suffer three defeats and your card disappears forever, win enough battles and you get to have your wish granted. So in that sense, it gives off both Accel World and Madoka vibes.
On the other hand, the card battle sequence kind of gives me Angelic Layer vibes.
But here’s the catch. After Ruuko first sees her special card, she has a dream of a post apocalyptic future with a monster that slightly resembles her card, Tama. Foreshadowing much?
So what can I say? The show appears to have potential, even though I couldn’t really enjoy it that much. The Madoka vibes it gives off is way too strong to ignore. So likely, this show might be a Madoka wannabe at worst, the next Madoka if we’re lucky, or the anime that will make us forget about Madoka at best.
My bet is somewhere between the first two. Urobuchi is pretty good writer…
Rating: 7/10
P.S.: It’s kind of stupid how Ruuko manages to play the game even if they explicitly mentions she doesn’t know the rules. The only instruction she received was to call out her avatars name and attack.
P.P.S.: Remember the gamer girl who explains things to her? Her wish is twincest. I kid you not.
