To be honest, I was kind of expecting a serious story much like Otoyomegatari, The Bride of the Water God and Rakuin no Monshou. This turns out to be rather light with a bit of comedic side. I’m not sure how to feel about that.
I’m comparing Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukishii to those three because they’re all similar in the premise of a girl being married off in a far away land due to circumstantial reasons. And much like the latter two, the bride is reluctant.
Anyway, Nike is the fourth princess of the Rain Dukedom, a small and poor country. But an offer from the large Sun Kingdom giving the Rain Dukedom autonomy in exchange for the hand of one of the princesses has the Dukedom sending out Nike to marry the Sun King.
But Nike’s not your average princess. She’s quite the free spirit, arriving early in the Sun Kingdom to learn about the said kingdom and its people all by herself. But she’s not particularly street savvy, as the harbor city kind of overwhelms her in our pilot episode.
She also has powers over the wind, which kind of came out from nowhere to be honest.
But thanks to a few help from a local family, all’s well that ends well, I guess. She does make it to the capital, and gets to meet her husband to be… who’s a kid.
And thus begins Nike’s life as the wife of a king younger than her in a foreign land.
To be honest, stories like this live and die based on the dynamics between the husband and wife. And since the husband, Livius, only showed up during the last few seconds, it’s hard to judge how good this will be. So at the very least, that requires a second episode.
As for other angles… The plot doesn’t seem like it will only deal with the relationship between the two, as flags have been raised on possible conspiracies and rebellion. So that’s good. Politics anyone?
Art is average. Typical anime art in my opinion. It does slightly switch art styles when trying to be comedic, that’s why it really isn’t a serious story like the three I mentioned above.
In short, it’s hard to say much about the show. The pilot introduces the premise, but has yet to actually show that premise in action. I’m still hopeful, though, for a good show.
Rating: 6/10
P.S.: I’m bothered how Nike’s attire looks modern while everyone else wears setting-appropriate medieval-esque clothes.
