Playstation’s new subscription is now rolling out with the Asian market getting first access starting May 24, 2022. The rest of the world will be done in staggered release with Japan, Sony’s home country, getting by June 2nd and the Americas by June 13th. Europe, Australia, and New Zealand will follow by June 23rd.
The new subscription will see a revision to Sony’s previous PlayStation Plus strategy which had members receiving online service access for multiplayer and online saves but also monthly games. Players have gone cold to the model as it has become obvious that once a new game arrives, Sony’s model won’t be able to fulfill to satisfaction the expectation that the free games incentives had intended.
This is in large contrast to Xbox’s Game Pass model and their Game Pass Ultimate which grants both Xbox and PC gamers access to nearly the entire Xbox games catalog including release day games both on Xbox and PC. The library is also bolstered further with Microsoft’s partnership with EA to add their own large library of games as well as Microsoft’s recent acquisition of AAA studios under Activision. This means that under the Microsoft Xbox Studios umbrella, Bethesda Games and Blizzard exist together with Call of Duty and a lot more… a whole lot more.
Sony effectively retaliated by acquiring the developer most synonymous to Xbox: Bungie, the maker of Halo. That acquisition still ongoing with most recent news the FTC wants to hear more from Sony to prevent antitrust issues.
The other retaliatory act from Sony is he new PlayStation Plus plans. The new plans recreates the PS+ model into a 3-tier vertical and fuses PS+ and PS Now into one service, PS Now being the gamestreaming service from Sony which is currently only available in certain regions.
The new plans will be as follows:
- PS+ Essential
- PS+ Extra
- PS+ Deluxe
- PS+ Premium
The tiers feature increasingly better incentive but with PS Now being a region-limited service, it does also play into the plans e.g. Deluxe vs. Premium. The breakdown of the plans is below:
