5 Biggest Risks Of Online Gaming And Ways Of Preventing Them

Online games are one of the most popular activities of today. They are available on consoles, computers, and mobile devices. The powers of the Internet make it possible – as it grows faster and more stable, more and more people all over the world can join video games online and play them together, competing with other people – real, excited, and dedicated, the same, as you are.

If you are into online gaming, you can play whenever you want and wherever you are. But it is not all about joy. There are risks – some of them are caused by the Internet, and others relate to the nature of gaming itself. So, let us consider these risks and ways to prevent them so that your next game sessions would bring you nothing but fun.

Malware, spyware, and viruses

The Web is not a secure place. Even downloading your favorite game on the official portal may place you at risk if some security issue takes place. Many players look for cheaper game versions, cheat codes, etc. These aspects introduce additional risks of obtaining a virus or malware “in a package” with the game. Then, the malware gets on your computer and opens the backdoor to cyber criminals.

Another problem is phishing links you may get in the players’ chat during the game or phishing emails sent to you as if from a legitimate source. The consequences are the same – the malware is on the computer.

How to prevent the risk

The rules of gaming security are the same as for other online surfing activities – install a reliable anti-virus and firewall, always update your software, and be very attentive with your correspondence and communication in players’ chats. Online gaming platforms attract millions of people, and there are a lot of cybercriminals hunting their potential victims.

Account theft

Another thing with gaming websites is that they store loads of personal information, and this data is a tidbit for hackers. There are usernames and passwords, email addresses, real names, addresses, payment means, etc. By hacking a popular gaming website, cybercriminals get access to all those details and can use them to steal identities, abuse, and blackmail users, hijack their connections, etc.

How to prevent the risk

Apply the safety means during the account creation. Read all the requirements attentively and consider which details are necessary to provide, and which fields are optional. Use strong passwords and never apply the same password to several resources. Always use VPN for gaming when using public Wi-Fi spots. You may refer to the basics overview to learn more about the efficiency of VPN. Besides, a very important aspect of gaming security is securing the physical device you use for online gaming. Never leave it unattended, lock it with a strong password, and delete all your personal information from it if you aren’t going to use it personally anymore.

DDoS attacks

DDoS attacks are a common threat. And they can come from both criminals and other players – believe it or not, but some gamers who get too engaged may attack the rival’s computer to beat them in the game or to avenge the winner for their own defeat. Criminals use DDoS attacks to hide their intrusion into the system or blackmail you by demanding some reward for stopping the attack.

How to prevent the risk

The main factor that makes DDoS attacks possible is knowing the IP address of the “victim.” Therefore, the best safety tip is to hide your IP address from any unauthorized access. The simplest means is VPN that you can install on any machine, like the VPN for Chrome that gets embedded into your browser. This way, you can apply the free VPN online to your home computer and mobile devices. It also allows you to protect your location and identity from any other hacking attempts while you are playing the game.

Cyberbullying

Many experts consider this threat the most problematic of all. Every player can be a victim of cyberbullying, no matter the age. Though, minors are the most vulnerable. Abuse, harassment, hurtful messages, or images, meant to humiliate or manipulate, aren’t rare in online gaming.

How to prevent the risk

Protect your personal information with the same recommendations we already provided. Conceal the information about your name, age, and address. Don’t share any personal details in the chats, and don’t click any links or download files. Use trustworthy VPN services like VeePN to stay anonymous, you can find out more from this source. Always report any inappropriate behavior. There are additional safety tips for parents – know what your children play, use parental control over devices, and build mutual trust to help and support your children.

Addiction

Gaming was always one of the most addictive activities, and online gaming is even more worrying in that aspect due to the audience reach and low barrier to entry. Online gaming addiction often causes health problems, and it can provoke more threatening consequences for your financial and psychological state.

How to prevent the risk

Here the key safety tip is setting the boundaries early – decide for how long you can afford yourself (or your children) to play online. Then, follow this rule. Find other hobbies to alternate with online games. And, of course, socialize more. There is nothing wrong with playing online games until it is under your control.

Online video games are meant to be fun, but to ensure they remain fun only, you need to know what can go wrong during the play and how to prevent it. We hope our article will help you enjoy your favorite games and stay safe.
