PLDT ULTERA Data Cap: Short Time Speed

Pldt Ultera Data Cap

PLDT is slowly killing off its SmartBro Canopy and WIMAX services and expanding its wireless Internet service with its Home Bro Ultera package launched around April 2014. The Ultera service offers a maximum of 10mbps speeds via LTE in packages as shown in the image below:

Ultera_Packages
PLDT Ultera packages as of 02/11/2015

Plan Ultera Basic Ultera Max Ultera Pro
Monthly Fee 999 1599 1999

UPDATE: 4/15/2015

Test
Updated Ultera Plans 4/15/2015

PLDT has recently updated their Ultera plans with new daily allowances. The new plans now indicate increased daily allowances of 1GB, 1.65GB and 2.3GB for their 3Mbps, 5Mbps, and 10Mbps plans respectively.

For more info on Ultera, you can head on over to PLDT’s Ultera page for details. For more details beyond that, read on.

Many of us are already aware that some of these wireless services are capped. As a Smart Canopy user, I’m subject to this cap also or as PLDT calls it, the Fair Usage Policy or FUP. This used to be a clouded subject wherein PLDT nor Smart didn’t disclose the details of their FUP like how much bandwidth would need to be expended before the cap is reached. It is assumed that its 15GB monthly but that doesn’t seem to be the case for me or some other users.

Now with Ultera, PLDT is going with another approach and its being really transparent about the bandwidth cap that Ultera has.

Pldt Ultera Data Cap
PLDT Ultera Bandwidth Allowance as of 02/11/2015

ULTERA BASIC ULTERA MAX ULTERA PRO
Original Speed 3Mbps 5Mbps 10Mbps
Daily Volume Allowance 0.3GB/day 0.5GB/day 1GB/day

We ensure quality of our service by giving each subscriber a daily volume allocation. This way, each subscriber can enjoy ultra-fast surfing, music downloads and movie streaming at your plan’s maximum speed until you reach your Daily Volume Allowance. If you go over your allowance, you can still enjoy surfing at an adjusted speed of 256 Kbps.

Your HOME Ultera connection resets to its original speed by the next day.

Let’s highlight that part once again:

If you go over your allowance, you can still enjoy surfing at an adjusted speed of 256 Kbps

Let’s do some math and see how much we can utilize this speeds. Using a basic download time calculator, we compute how long it would take us to saturate our bandwidth cap for the Ultera Pro package with a 1000MB/1GB daily volume allowance:

Download_Time_Calc

At 10Mbps with a bandwidth cap of 1GB or 1000MB (approximately), it would take us just over 13 minutes to consume our daily volume allowance. And what happens when you go over your Ultera’s Daily Volume Allowance:

…you can still enjoy surfing at an adjusted speed of 256 Kbps

Your connection will be reduced to the enjoyable speed of 256Kbps. So what’s 256Kbps like? Let’s go back to the download time calculator and looking closely at the 256Kbps row we can see that to download another 1000MB/1GB past our cap at 256Kbps, it will take us 08:40:50 (HH:MM:SS). Eight hours and 40 minutes and 50 seconds.

If you’re a heavy downloader of multimedia content, those bandwidth cap can get easily get saturated and 13 minutes for the Ultera Pro bundle daily does seem a bit quick for what you basically pay Php1999 monthly for. Speaking of prices, the Ultera plans will also be subject to an initial cash-out of Php1,500 and a Php250 device cost. You will be then tied to a 36-month lock-in period to endure your enjoyable speeds.

Ultera_Lockin

The same goes for Smart Canopy users who upgraded their subscription to Ultera but they do get a discount if they opt for the faster Ultera Max or Pro bundles. Also their activation fee and device fee will be waived. Still, a 36-month lock-in period will be in-place.

Pldt Home Ultera Upgrade

If you’re mostly a Facebook/Twitter kinda person, you won’t be saturating these plans as fast as any download enthusiast but its highly unlikely that your social media activities would demand such a high speed connection. So the question is what kind of usage does PLDT expect people who will avail of these plans have? Note that around launch up until recently, the PLDT Ultera package had a better capping limit with speeds dropping to 30% when the cap is reached meaning that for Ultera Pro subscribers, their 10Mbps after cap will drop to a reasonable 3Mbps.

Any Ultera users out there have experience in the capping or the overall service? Do share your thoughts and experience so far.

UPDATE 7/20/2016: Smart Bro canopy users are being urged to either upgrade to Ultera or the Ultera 2mbps uncapped subscription. This is to make way for the phasing out of the Canopy wireless subscribers in favor of the Ultera.

How’s the signal rate? The ping times looks alright but is the signal stable? I’m actually inevitably going to drop to Ultera due to the same area limitation so I’m curious how good their signal rate is.

    • Michael Ryan Liwanag on February 11, 2015 7:40 pm

The signal is kind of fine. The posted image is the speed we get with 4/5 bars of signal. It’s stable for the most part unless they have to go to maintenance or some other reason.

Dati akong canopy user for more than 8 years, and then this december may nag ronda sa subdivision para i upgrade ung canopy to ultera, so pinili ko ung 1699 10mbps plan.. ang problem, ni hindi ko maabot ung 10mbps speed, or kahit ung speed ng canopy ko na stable sa 1.6mbps.

Hello! in our case we did not really choose to upgrade. we just received a call from pldt one day telling us they’re now waving off all wimax thus they’ll change our connection to Ultera. So terrible. I just downloaded 1 700mb movie today and my connection sunk. Wimax was ultimately better.

Just saw this post, as I’ve been experiencing this crappy ultera connection for weeks now, with no resolution. I was told by their csr that I should not be included with the 256 kbps capped speed policy, since it only applies to accounts that were upgraded/installed from February 1 2015 onwards. Mine was upgraded on January 24 2015. I was pormised a capped speed of 30% of maximum speed, which for me should be around 0.9 mbps (3mbps original speed). But that’s not the case, I’m capped daily at 256kbps dl speed. Even my upload speed drops to around 0.3 mbps.

What use is a 3mbps connection if your daily limit is 300mb? It’s really stupid. And I feel scammed, as I was promised a 30% of maximum speed when I reach my daily cap. I wasn’t even informed of their new 256kbps policy.

My ultera modem also automatically restarts very often, affecting gaming/downloads/uploads severely (I use my internet to download/upload video files for editing for work). Almost every day, for more than two weeks now, I call them about the problem and all they say is it’s because my internet is already capped for the day. It’s like they didn’t even read the previous reports. What a crappy customer support they have.

TL;DR: I’m not recommending Ultera packages to anyone. Crappy daily caps+crappy customer support. It’s a scam people.
My 1mbps (spikes to 2mbps) smart bro canopy was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more reliable.

This is utter fucking horseshit!! 300MB per day with the Ultera Basic 999 plan. I can’t believe this shit! If this isn’t a scam I don’t know what is. You can exhaust that cap in 13 minutes! Why not just have a stopwatch in your hand and after 13 minutes look at your screen and see your net speed turn into a crawl.

    FUCK YOU PLDT!
You’ll give us 3mbps/5mbps/10mpbs but make it so that the data cap could be reached in only 13-14 minutes of downloading, that’s like giving someone a liter of cola and saying you can only take a sip per day.
FIX YOUR STUPID, UNREASONABLE AND BROKEN DATA CAP!!

im okay with the wimax now and this shit about ultera came and we are being forced to convert. It isnt wise to continue pay for the very rot service theyre giving us.

Best thing to do is not to support/”downgrade” to ultera bro, its a friggin’ scam. If you have no other choice aside from PLDT, get their dsl services instead of ultera. All it will give you is stress lol.

That’s IF you havent downgraded yet. If you’re on ultera already like the rest of us, well, we’re shit out of luck.

Same here! I got a call yesterday from PLDT’s subcontractor that they’re going to upgrade our smartbro canopy to ultera and they’re coming this afternoon. Curious, I searched about ultera and found this article. Now that I had read your comments, I don’t want to do the “upgrading” anymore. Then I remember them saying that smartbro canopy will phase out this year that is why they are upgrading every smartbro user in our area. Is it true? or they’re only saying that so we upgrade to ultera?

Hello! That’s exactly what the contractor told us when they called us for a so called upgrade. They say Wimax will be phased out. At first after the “upgrade”, my speed reached 3mbs compared to the 2mbps of wimax but after downloading just 1 700mb movie it sunk and cant even browse google.

The next day tatawag ulit ako ang isasagot sakin ibang problema at ibang feedback ng support group .

Since you probably know things, you shouldn’t have subscribed to this phony service in the first place. When I heard about this offer along with the pricing, even before the reviews were written, I called it bs. I researched carefully and I wasn’t wrong. You cannot fully enjoy this service. There’s no point in subscribing any of those ‘ultera’ plans when they will only offer a very ridiculous low amount of data allowance.

I was okay with the Canopy plan with just a constant speed of 1.6mbps, but now with this thing, I can enjoy high speeds… for only one hour a day. After that, I can barely run a Youtube video on 240p, let alone 320p. I can’t even see shit because it’s so blurry. I’m a heavy downloader, and I have a lot of games on Steam that get regularly updated. I literally have to wait about an hour for it to finish downloading the update and then I can play. I’d say I’m disappointed, but I don’t hold high expectations for PLDT.

We currently have ultera basic. It’s okay I guess until you decide you want to download a movie or something because once it hits the cap it really slows down. I don’t understand why they even have to put a cap on it when customers are paying a lot already for the service. Comcast blast internet package is under $30 for speeds minimum of 25mbps with no capping. That’s in the US. But here, the speeds don’t even reach their advertised speeds but they still have a cap? What treachery is this?

GOOD NEWS! PLDT reverted their fup policy and now it’s back to its former policy which is 30% of your original speed.

Saw this just now on their page, “Activation fee: monthly device fee within 36 month lock-in period for all Ultera Plans, charged on 1st-36th bill. device will be subscriber owned. Speed may drop to 30% of the original speed once you exceed the recommended usage per month. Minimum speeds of 256 kbps at 85% reliability where wireless broadband is available. Add-on content for purchase via myHome portal: pldthome.com/account. Available in selected areas only.”

So ayun 1st day pa lang, wala ng sign of upgrade. Di man nga nagloload ang facebook. nakailang tawag kami, sabi nila check daw nila within 24hrs. Tapos same old story hanggang ngayon. Is there any way para pa terminate itong connection legally? Kakainis talaga..

This is the most BS thing that PLDT did. It’s not worth what you’re paying for. Sa lhat ng ngplalano, wag na. Mabuwibuwisit lng kayo sa plan n to.

I share exact sentiment. After few minutes of surfing the net and a little bit of youtube, the 3mbps became no mbps. And when I called *1888, thet said I already reach the daily volume allowance of 300mb. After several complaints, they said they upgraded my daily allowance to 1GB. But still the connection is crap. And just recently, a techical support named YVES SIGEÑO told me that they cannot do anything about it. This home bro ultera sh*t.

I had unlimitted Mybro wimax before with 1 mpbs speed but it was very reliable!! I can stream videos, download movies and the like. after ko matapos yung 2 year contract ko tinawagan ako ng pldt for an “upgrade” kuno sa ultera… unang banat nila i-a-ugrade daw yung speed at free and installation at ang device pero NEVER ni binaggit na may capping at 256kpbs lang ang speed after capping!!!!! ever since ininstall nila yung device nung febuary 2015, hindi ko na binayaran yung ultera ko and now they’re texting me and threatening me that they will send me to their legal department!! what the hell?!! baka ako pa magdemanda at bayaran nila sa perwisyo na ginawa nila!! saka walang akong contrata na pinirmahan!!

    1) 10 mbps with WIFI (no limit of capacity and pay only P500) 2) if we want to add landline we’ll pay more -P 200. That’s the ideal budget and internet needs for the majority of people.

Wtf is this! I thought that once you consumed this garbage capping of 1.65gb/day, it will reduce to a minimum speed of 256kbps? I called this hopless hotline of *1888 and all the answer I got is to wait and wait for 24H, then another 24H and so on for the speed to reset with no solution to the problem. They cant event answer me why the heck we are receiving 30kbps instead of the minimum 256kbps. They even got the nerves to tell me we haved consumed our 1.65gb/day allowance when all day long we havent used our net because we are all at work! Worst customer service ever! 36 month lock in period? Another (expletive) garbage!

I wrote NTC today on complaining PLDT HomeBro Ultera on what they are doing ripping people of their hard earned money , and giving all their subscribers stress and hard times on complaining along the way.

    ”
    Dear NTC,

    http://www.back2gaming.com/opinion-editorials/pldt-ultera-data-cap-short-time-speed/

As you can read on the link that i attached.
Pldt HomeBro Ultera has force many of its subscriber to convert from smartbro which has a lower internet speed but has no data cap to its new name to PLDT Homebro ultera that has higher internet speed but now has data cap.

All former SmartBro Subscriber was brainwashed to upgrade to a higher internet speed with no instalation fee and no cash out as they say on their advertisement banner. But all of us smartbro subscriber who switched to PLDT homebro Ultera was doomed!!!!
Because as you can see in the link i attached.

HomeBro Ultera changed their policy on their internet usage for subscribers. from almost no limit internet a month to a Horrible internet package of 30gig data a month, without even explaining to its subscriber its going to happen and we are locked to a 36 months subscription period.

This move by their company is nothing but a greedy and a example of false and misleading explanation of products and services. which i think is a human violation and is punishable by law.

I hope NTC would do something about this. Many people are suffering for paying more for less. People here in the philippines are being treated like this by giant companies because they know they can get away with this.
I just hope you can do something about this and give them want they deserve.

    Thank you!

I asked one of their technicians regarding the speed differences the other day. He said that the download speed your browser shows is actually in kilobytes per second, but the plans they tell you are listed in kilobits per second.

1 kilobyte = 8 kilobits, and so your download speed is actually 32 kilobytes per second, which is very bad when you have some people downloading at 1 megabyte per second.

(Note: some people like me complain that inspite of their minimum 256 kbps internet, I’m getting only 30 kBps. I have the misconception that b= B)

misleading, clever advertising by this company! Big turn off!

For info, naka Smart Bro canopy kami since 2005 with a monthly bill of Php 782.41.

    Dear PLDT Homebro UlteRA users.

I need your help before i got an on-site visit from technical crew from PLDT.

Tell me what happen when you visit this site: http://whatismyipaddress.com/

If you refresh this page about every 2 minutes do your IPv4 Address change or stay the same ?

It changes here in the interval from 121.54.44.88 to 121.54.44.95 every 2-3 minutes i refresh the page.

I dont find that correct. Should stay the same until i off/on the modem or maybe every 24 hour. Not every 2-3 minutes.

It is important to find out if the IP change every 2-3 minutes for all of us or only here at my place.

In advance thank you for your help testing.

Before January 22, the Smart Bro technicians came saying they had to upgrade to pldt and they added a wifi we don’t use as we have our own. Then our service began to stop and we called *1888 and two men came. One man said we had a broken cable and I told him we did not. Then I showed him the pin to their tower which was not responding and he keyed in some blanks and backspaced. Having been a computer analyst for over 20 years for a major US railroad I new DOS is a level just above machine language, which I can write. There are no options as he said 25-15 at the end of the ping message that did not show the characters….another lie.. Then they went up the tower and said the slide switch had come loose, but we had intermittent service twice for a few hour on the two previous days, which means their visit was under false pretenses, everything they said was a lie, but when I had to take a shower because i just got back from shopping. they put in the f utlra card, which actually they had already began the process before January 22nd, telling me Smart Bro was no longer available. I think I have no faith in anything they say. They have proven to me as a computer analyst they were lying three time, having entered my property under false pretenses and the service had been cut off from outside my home by Smart Bro.Actually I had to sign the paper because I feared for our safety knowing a Globe custimer called in and they send people and murdered them. They also told us the rate would be p999 a month which I had paid, and not I get a bill for nearly p2900. Is this not fraud by Smart Bro and PLDT?

Please use your data wisely guys; please install software that can monitor your bandwidth, who are/is using your wifi? how long this user(s) connected to your wifi? and what are their activity if you know this your monthly data allocation cannot reach you limit or that data cappings.
