Olympus is just too small, it seems. The next adventure of our God-killing hero points North, and the foul creatures of Ragnarok will finally meet their match. The game was set to be released this year, but Hell can wait. Kratos is set to break loose again in 2022 for PS4 and PS5. So, right now, we can only speculate what this adventure will look like.
And we will.
A Much Anticipated War
Fans anxiously waiting for a new sequel had to settle for a promo video, released during the PlayStation Showcase last September. The actual game will only be launched in 2022, although there isnโt a specific date so far.
However, after August passed without news from the new title, no one really expected to see a full game this year. The game will run on PS4 and PS5, but owners of a PS4 version will be able to buy the improved version for PS5 for $10. New purchases are expected to cost about $70.
While the apocalypse doesnโt loom upon our hero, there are battle games to try out. Consider giving a shot to one of the many MOBA games available in a well-known casino portal like NewCasinos to ensure you arenโt missing any of the action.
Storyline
The new trailer gives us a taste of whatโs to come. Kratos looks older, and his son, Atreus, has grown considerably, as his inherited abilities are starting to show. Ragnarok is the Norse mythologyโs version of the apocalypse, when giants, beasts, and other fouls come to kill men and Gods.
The guy in the end that makes Kratos look like Denny DeVitto is Odinโs son, called Tyr. Tyr is the unlucky half-brother of Baldur and Thor, who ended up caged by his father. Did we hear โrevengeโ?
The trailer also shows a bit of the Nine Realms, where the adventure will take place. Three realms are added to the other six previously shown: Asgard, Svartalfheim, and Vanaheim. New characters are added to the mix, such as Angrboda.
Angry-boda?
Angrboda is a giant, in Norse mythology. Her name means โthe one who brings sadnessโ. Some players were surprised (others, even unsettled) by the fact that the character is portrayed by a young black girl and complained about โmisplaced activismโ.
The narrative director, Matt Sophos, has stated his position on Twitter, saying that writing โis always a political actโ. On the same thread, he points out that only the positions that โarenโt agreed withโ are considered political.
Expectations
Some things werenโt clearly shown in the trailer. Yet, they are also likely to appear in the game judging by the storyline. One of them would be the Fimbulwinter, which is the three-years long winter that comes before Ragnarok. Some former allies will probably become enemies, like Freya and Thor. Both are expected to seek revenge for Baldurโs death.
The cast brings famous faces, like the actors Richard Schiff (as Odin), Ryan Hurst (Thor), and Danielle Bisutti (Freya). Cory Balrog, whoโs been directing the previous editions of the game, is giving space to Eric Williams in this version. Williams isnโt new to Kratoโs universe, though, as heโs been part of the team from the beginning.
In this edition, fans can also expect to face more challenging enemies. Monsters and beasts are combat-ready, and some old combat tricks just wonโt cut it anymore. Players seem to have much more freedom of movement and choice, making for more challenging gameplay at first. Because Kratos is battling shoulder-to-shoulder with his son, some tactics also must change.
Poetic Licence
For those whoโve been missing the previous adventures of God of War, our hero now has a son named Atreus. At the end of 2018โs adventure, Atreus discovers that his mother was actually a giant, making him half-giant and half god.
Atreusโ mysterious lineage becomes a point of friction between himself and his father and a central plot point. Probably very few fans saw this one thing coming: Atreus has another name, Loki. So, Kratos would be actually father to the famous Norse trickster. How about that?!
Who Can Join the Adventure?
God of War Ragnarok is set to run on PS4 and PS5 only, and thereโs no PC or Xbox version at sight. However, that doesnโt mean it won’t come, we should keep an eye on press releases and news from the studio as it may come at a later stage. There is some hope.
Conclusion
The gameโs official trailer is only about three minutes long. Indeed, it shows only a tiny fraction of whatโs to come. This new title closes the Nordic adventure of our hero so that we can expect a lot of surprises and twists. See you next year!
