When playing Esports, professional gamers use a lot of ‘strange’ words. These jargons, over time, have grown into a more effective communication medium in the iGaming space. They could come in handy for veteran gamers, newbies, and folks who engage in GGBet Betting on eSports. This article focuses on deciphering some iGaming slang for every Esports enthusiast.

35 eSports Slangs and Their Meanings

Noting the importance of understanding slang, we have explained some eSports slang in the glossary below.

  1. 1-Up: This signifies an extra life.
  2. 4X Games: This term refers to games where the primary goal of the game is to eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate the world.
  3. AoE: This terminology is an acronym for “Area of Effect.” This refers to the radius that a weapon affects when used. Usually, weapons such as guns have no AoE except a straight line towards which they are directed. However, grenades and bombs have a medium to large area of effect.
  4. AFK: This represents “Away From Keyboard.” It is used to politely communicate a short absence of a player from his computer or digital device.
  5. Avatar: These refer to in-game characters created either by the developers or a player.
  6. Buff: This is the contrast of Nerf slang. It means an increase in power in the stats of an item or a game character. It is used to add strength and even the battlefield when gaming.
  7. Bullet sponge: This refers to enemy characters that require lots of bullets to kill.
  8. Camping: This means that a player decides to sit around without battling, rather, the player feeds off the drops of other players. In games such as Call of Duty, Campers (those who engage in camping) are prominent.
  9. Cheesing: This eSports Jargon refers to utilizing a cheap strategy to defeat an opponent. This is done to reduce a player’s trouble. A typical example is the use of several powerful combos repeatedly till the enemy is defeated.
  10. Clutch: This slang refers to instances where an outnumbered player kills off the opposing team members one at a time till victory is attained.
  11. Console: These are special computers designed for game activities only
  12. Craft: The term “Craft” points to the act of combining game resources to create a weapon or any other game item.
  13. CT/T: This term is prominent among tactical shooters. It stands for “Counter Terrorist/Terrorist.” “Counter-Terrorists” are players or teams that are attacking, while “Terrorists” are those defending.
  14. DPS: This term could refer to two things in the iGaming space. First, it can mean “Damage per Second.” Here, it refers to the extent to which a weapon can deal. DPS could also refer to the game characters with a more significant advantage when damaging their enemies.
  15. Dungeon: This refers to an enclosed space where there are strong enemies. However, there are always high rewards in return.
  16. FPS: This is an acronym for First-Person Shooter. It occurs when the game is viewed in a first-person perspective. The gaming location can be seen through the character’s eyes. FPS can also refer to “Frames per Second”. Here, it refers to measuring the smooth running of the game.
  17. Ganking: This term is used when stronger players gang against a weaker team or person.
  18. Grinding: When this term is used, it refers to repeating a certain act to attain a reward or points. For example, a gamer playing previous levels to gather enough resources to level up is grinding.
  19. HP: The eSports Jargon means Health Point or Hit Points. It refers to your player’s life force. When it is exhausted, the player dies.
  20. Instalock: When a player hears or sees the slang “Instalock,” it refers to swiftly locking down a character to protect it from an opponent player.
  21. K/D: This acronym stands for Kill-to-Death Ratio. It is a rating method used to calculate the performance of shooters. Here, the number of opponent kills is divided by the number of deaths. For example, a player kills 10 players and dies only twice. The player has a 5.0 Kill/Death Ratio.
  22. Lag: This refers to a delay between what is displayed and the input a gamer gives to his/her character. Here, the game server takes time before reacting to your actions.
  23. Meta: The slang “Meta” implies the latest strategies or tactics developed in a game. Keeping touch with Metas gives any player an edge over others using older gaming tactics.
  24. MMORPG: This stands for “Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game”. This refers to a virtual game where countless players can exist in the same gaming space simultaneously.
  25. MP: This iGaming slang can mean “Mana Points” or “Multiplayer”. Mana Points refers to how much is needed to use a particular skill in the game.

  28. NPC: The eSports Jargon “NPC” is an acronym for a Non-Player Character. This refers to in-game characters that any player cannot use. Instead, they sometimes give instructions to the player. Oftentimes, there is a penalty for killing NPCs.

  30. Peel: This slang refers to the act of taking the attention of the enemy from a team member and focusing it on your game character. This is only done to achieve a certain goal or protect a weaker member.
  31. PWN: Though it is a slight misspelling of the word “own,” it remains prominent in its use. It indicates a situation where a player obliterates his opponent or dominates the enemy in battle.
  32. Ragequit: In iGaming, the term “Ragequit” refers to instances where players get upset and leaves a game during a battle. The player often acts rageful while leaving.
  33. Smurf: The term stands for a situation whereby a professional gamer with years of experience creates a new account to toy with new players for fun. However, regulations are now in place to prevent the creation of smurfed accounts.
  34. Spawn: It implies the starting point of every player. In a game, there is a location every player emerges from – that’s the spawn. If you know the spawn locations, you can create tactics to eliminate the enemy.
  35. Tag: This term can refer to the in-game pseudonym of a player.
