30 Years of Internet in the Philippines
Converge ICT CEO Dennis Anthony Uy shared a story of his journey from cable operator to ISP provider also mentioning the history of the Philippines’ internet connectivity to the world, how it started and how from a humble low bitrate connection, we’re now into up to Gigabit speeds to the home thanks to the competition that Converge has brought to the scene.
Getting to where we are now is no simple and affordable feat. Equipment had to be sourced privately for anyone looking to venture into the business but looking back, Converge sees it worth it for what they’ve achieved.
In a sitdown interview with the Converge ICT CEO Dennis Anthony Uy, COO Jesus Romero, and Ookla CEO Stephen Bye, I asked the gentlemen from Converge what’s next and Dennis Anthony Uy was more than happy to share details into his next project for Converge with his interest in bringing cloud gaming to the market.
While he did not share technical details, the Converge CEO is obviously hinting at a service similar to GeForce NOW. GeForce NOW is NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service usually partnered with ISPs to provide high-end gaming experiences without having your own high-end device. Other cloud gaming avenues are Xbox cloud gaming and PlayStation Now but given the current landscape for both service in our region, its highly unlikely this is the service they’ll be partnering up with.
To celebrate this milestone, Converge is also extending its Boost Mode promotion for subscribers temp boosting their Plan 1500 from 200mbps to 300mbps with Plan 2000 jumping to 500mbps and Plan 2500 going to 700mbps.
The promotion is extended until June 30, 2024 as a “Thank You” for being the best ISP in the Philippines. More information on Boost Mode here.
