Garena PH: Clash of the Titans LoL Tournament

The first saturday of the month of April was uber charged for League of Legend players for the date marked the first ever official LoL tournament headed by Garena PH, the local distributor of Riot Game’s MOBA game, League of Legends. 8 teams were organized to duke it out in the fields of justice but one would emerge victorious to gain the rights to represent the country in LoL.

From Left to Right: Ayumi, Shatzzi and Excalibear

Attendees were given free in-game champions Alistair, Jax and Soraka, LoL posters and an exclusive PAX skin for Jax (The Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) skin for Jax is LoL’s version Penny Arcade’s comic character, The Cardboard Tube samurai).

The event was hosted by GM Shatzzi and GM Excalibear (sorry no FB fanpage guys) who were both in costumes with Shatzzi in her Default Miss fortune costume and Excalibear in her Annie in wonderland costume (with a miniature Tibbers to boot!) to host the event. Ayumi Kassinique was also present as Katarina.

The event wasn’t as packed as most game cons are concerned however there were enough players who attended Clash of the Titans that the two thousand printed copies of the ticket for the hero giveaway was given away with the event just halfway through.

Match Proper

I was told that I missed the early matches (since I have a day job thank you for asking) so I was only able to catch the finals between team sFc and team pcfc. The finals was a best of three match with champion banning in place.

First Round

The first round of the finals started with sFc having Shen, Taric, Tristana, Amumu and Kassadin as their lineup and pcfc with Singed, Zilean, Malphite, Corki and Udyr.

Early game, the field was quiet with minor clashes in lanes however pcfc’s udyr drew first blood as it was able to take down sFc’s amumu who was also jungling. The game was paced by pcfc with sFc slowly losing one turret after another. Pcfc was like a well-oiled machine as they kept on winning clash after clash with one or two champions escaping while sFc was struggling to fend off the vicious attacks.

The game’s break point was when pcfc scored an ace in the middle lane at the inner turret. Things went downhill from there with pcfc gaining the first win of the finals match.

Second Round

The second round of the finals had sFc going with Malphite, Annie, Janna, Tristana and Annivia while pcfc had Kayle, Karthus, Rammus, Taric and Urgot.

Pcfc only needed to win this round to be hailed as champs and they brought the house down on sFc too in this round. However, pcfc took a more slow and deliberate pace in the 2nd round in comparison to their aggressively explosive first round match. Team sFc was still trying to gain ground in the second match but they were overpowered by the combined efforts of team pcfc with Karthus mowing down all champs that came across his (its) path.

sFc valiantly tried to fend off the inevitable but in the end they had to succumb to another defeat in the hands of pcfc.

Post Match

Team pcfc won the crown and a whopping fifty thousand pesos cash prize while sFc was able to bag twenty thousand with both teams taking home trophies of their achievement.

We were able to interview and ask both team captains of sfc and pcfc to get their thoughts on the outcome of the matches.

Here’s what sFc.r1mike had to say:

While here’s what team captain pcfc.iddo had to say:

writer’s side note:

We were also able to test out and play the Nintendo 3DS which shin brought with him. Reviews for the 3DS and the SSFIV: 3D Edition are on the works so watch out for it.
