Intel’s Newsroom Twitterย account tweeted a picture of Raja Koduri with the caption “Intel’s first discrete GPU coming in 2020”ย with a shortened link redirecting to Intel’s announcement of Raja’s transfer from Radeon Technologies Group.
Back when Intel announced that Raja Koduri will be joining them as their Chief Architect, it wasn’t clear if Intel would be making a GPU for computing like the Quadro graphics from Nvidia or AMD’s Firepro graphics. Currently, Intel has a prototype GPU that Linus’ benchmarked showing that it isn’t designed for gaming. With this announcement, it is pretty clear that Intel wants to compete with AMD and Nvidia in the consumer market.
With this announcement we expect that Nvidia and AMD will lower the price of its current and upcoming GPUs to atleast resist Intel’s entry. Intel’s entry will also make the GPU competition intense as Green and Red would have to step up their GPU game. Perhaps will see a single solution graphics card that is able to run High settings at 4K Resolution and at a high refresh rate. The question is, which GPU maker will offer it first?
