Manila’s largest power distributor Meralco is pushing thru their plans to build micro-modular nuclear power plants and is looking to start building them by 2028.

Meralco signed an agreement back in late 2023 together with the Ultra Safe Nuclear (UNSC) to explore and study the feasibility of deploying USNC’s Micro-Modular reactors in the Philippines. The study is now moving forward with this latest development to craft a proof-of-concept.

UNSC designs and builds micro-modular reactors that can scale up to 300 megawatts of power per module with Meralco potentially eyeing a smaller scale of 5 to 10 megawatt in remote locations to establish the concept.
