In an effort to ensure security and ongoing support for its users, Microsoft has announced plans to automatically upgrade all Windows 10 users to the latest version 22H2 release, starting next month. This move comes as previous versions of Windows 10, including version 21H2, will reach the official end of support on June 13, 2023.
Windows 10 version 22H2 is the final iteration of the Windows 10 operating system and will receive support from Microsoft until October 2025. Consequently, Microsoft is urging all Windows 10 users to upgrade to the latest release, as version 22H2 will continue to receive servicing for over two more years.
The announcement was made through a Microsoft Learn document, where it stated:
“Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for Windows 10 consumer devices and non-managed business devices that are at, or within several months of, reaching end of servicing. This keeps your device supported and receiving monthly updates that are critical to security and ecosystem health.”
With the discontinuation of support for Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier, users on those versions will be exposed to potential security vulnerabilities, as Microsoft will no longer be obligated to provide updates for those specific releases. Although the exact timeline for the forced upgrades has not been specified, it is expected to commence before June 13.
Fortunately, the upgrade to Windows 10 version 22H2 is a minor update that takes only a few minutes to install. Notably, there are no new features introduced in version 22H2 when compared to its predecessor, version 21H2. As a result, most users are unlikely to notice any significant changes following the automatic upgrade to the latest release.
While Microsoft’s current focus lies primarily on Windows 11 and future developments, the company continues to work on ongoing feature updates and platform enhancements. In the coming weeks, Microsoft plans to roll out new features for Windows 11 customers as part of its “continuous innovation” initiative, which aims to deliver regular updates and enhancements to Windows users.
As the upgrade process unfolds, Windows 10 users can rest assured that Microsoft is committed to providing a secure and up-to-date operating system experience. By migrating to Windows 10 version 22H2, users will benefit from continued support and vital security updates, ensuring their devices remain protected and their ecosystem remains healthy.
