Blizzcon 2017 is going down right now and during the opening ceremony, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime has announced a couple of updates including plenty of updates regarding the esports status of Blizzard games. Before he closed his opening keynote, Mike announced that starting November 14, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty will be free-to-play including full access to the ranked ladders. For existing owners of SC2: WoL, Blizzard will be giving free access to the Heart of the Swarm expansion pack.
This goes in line with the esports direction that Blizzard has been pursuing for its gaming. Removing the purchase barrier and making Starcraft II F2P is a good way to open up the classic RTS to a whole new generation of gamers who have become used to the MOBA genre and have never experienced RTS prior.

There’s a few catch as detailed in the site but it opens up plenty of avenues for Blizzard to explore potential new talents into their field.
