In todayโs state of gaming where every title release aims to have some sort of grand announcement or even some sort of teaser leading up to the reveal, itโs very much surprising that Nintendo decided to unveil its newest console by quietly dropping a video on YouTube like itโs a last minute thing. The Nintendo Switch 2, after all the speculations, rumors and everything in between, finally shows itself.
The video is more of a first look at the Nintendo Switch 2 instead of an in-depth look at the console or at least an overview of what we can expect from it. Itโs a tad bigger console than the first Switch, with a different kickstand and two USB Type-C ports.
What received a major overhaul seems to be the JoyCons and how they connect to the Switch 2. Aside from the bigger size, they now have a different mechanism and interface. Of course, thereโs also that new minimalist design that feels like a departure from the colorful aesthetics of the Switch 1.
Nintendo confirms that Switch 2 can play both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but we will be seeing Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive titles. Oh, and another thing to note – some Switch 1 titles may not be fully compatible.
Given Nintendoโs track record when it comes to generational releases of its major consoles, the Switch 2 looks to be more of an upgrade similar to what the company did with the New 3DS. Well, it is a Switch 2, after all.
Whatever the case, there will be a Nintendo Direct on April 2nd, 2025 where the company will likely showcase the new features of the console, as well as exclusive titles and how much of a performance it will get compared to its predecessor.
