CLOSER LOOK
The GIGABYTE U2442V Extreme Performance Ultrabook is a slim 20.5mm notebook clad in a brushed aluminum body. The outer shell is solid and feels very sturdy. The aluminum shell itself has a slight copper tint(champagne gold as GIGABYTE puts it) to it. The ultrabook exhausts air via the back, which curiously gets partly blocked by the screen part of the notebook when in use when the screen is opened all the way.
GIGABYTE has stated that some Ultrabooks get away with slimming their products by foregoing expansion ports like VGA amongst others. With the U2442V, users get a fully featured HDMI output, VGA, audio ports, an Ethernet port, a pair of USB2.0 and a pair of USB3.0 ports and an SD card reader. Definitely a lot of options right there.
Flipping up the U2442V’s screen, we can’t help but have that Macbook feeling inside us. Since Ultrabooks are intended to follow a similar path to said products, it’s a given. Separating these though from Apple’s close architecture is the freedom of manufacturers to create products as they see fit.
In GIGABYTE’s case, they have employed a rather familiar layout with the keyboard and touch pad but has added the extra feature of backlit keys. Certainly not something you’d want when conserving power although a very handy feature still. The power button is discretely placed on the left side with the utility button for accessing GIGABYTE’s launcher.
Ultrabooks don’t really have much to fiddle around with with basically the entire platform enclosed including the batteries. The GIGABYTE U2442V does allow access to the RAM. Inside you’ll find 2 stick of 4GB DDR3-1333C9 SODIMM courtesy of Transcend.
The U2442V comes with a power brick and a travel sleeve.
GIGABYTE manages to squeeze in all its connectivities within Intel spec for Ultrabooks at a very low-profile 20.5mm thickness.
