KINGMAX has been a relatively small player in the memory market and has remained pretty much in select regions. While their name may not be as out there as some of the more mainstream brands, they do have a distinct trait to their brand, something that always breaks norms much like their NANO Gaming RAM of years past. For the most part, KINGMAX has been doing pretty well making other flash-based solutions including flash drives, memory cards and such but they’ll occasionally put out some gaming products and then and now like their KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON memory. But this time, they’re stepping it into more familiar territories as KINGMAX introduces their first ever RGB LED-illuminated memory, the KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON RGB DDR4 memory kit.

Closer Look
KINGMAX packages the ZEUS DRAGON series in a full-colored print box with mostly black going around the packaging. The front has a glamor shot of the product, in this case the ZEUS DRAGON RGB with the product all lit up for maximum appeal. Special highlight is taken on the RGB wording and there is a ASUS AURA Sync badge to designate compatibility. There are tick boxes on the front to denote which SKU you are getting. Our sample is a pair of 8GB sticks running DDR4-3200.
Inside we get a slim bundle of just the DIMM modules. Contrary to the ZEUS DRAGON’s original designs, the ZEUS DRAGON RGB sports a taller heatsink with brushed metal finish. The dragon head is still etched for aesthetic purposes with the ZEUS logo marked on. The heatspreader form a partial half to the top side of the module revealing barely half of the lightbar on each side.
The increase in height isn’t that dramatic though and the KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON RGB memory sticks are still highly compatible with many motherboards.

Note that the KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON RGB will work with any DDR4-compatible motherboards but control for the lighting module will be via ASUS AURA Sync as of this moment.
Performance Testing
Test Setup
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K
RAM: KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON RGB 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200
Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z370 Aorus GAMING 7
GPU: ZOTAC GTX 1080 Ti AMP
SSD: WD Blue 1TB
PSU: SeaSonic Platinum P1050
Cooling: Fractal Design Celsius S36
Display: ViewSonic VX2475Smhl-4K
Out of the box, the KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON RGB sports 16-18-18-38 timings on our DDR4-3200 kit. Not bad but nothing impressive either. We tried tightening the timings first but CL15-17-17-38 wasn’t too stable so I felt this wasn’t my lucky draw in memory chips. Pushing it on the clock side though we did get the kit to DDR4-3600.
Getting the KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON RGB to DDR4-3600 wasn’t easy though, at tighter timings it just didn’t go stable enough with BSODs every bootup or during benching. Loosening the timings to 18-21-21-43 did the trick to make the kit bench stable but random BSODs would still pop-up during average use. Could be a voltage bump was all that it was asking for but I’d prefer to keep my OC on the 1.35v limit unless we’re running some serious cooling on the memories.
A note on the numbers, the previous ZEUS DRAGON non-RGB memories were tested on an i7-7700K system hence the difference in results. These are presented for your reference only and are not meant for direct comparison.
Conclusion

In this game, its all about looks and if you can offer that RGB swag for less than the competition, you’re going to have a lot of interest going for you. As of this moment though, we’ve yet to receive word on pricing for the KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON RGB DDR4 memory kits. As this is uncharted territory for KINGMAX, we can’t go by history alone. That said we’ll talk about the product’s overall impression on us.
Performance is pretty much as expected, it wasn’t stellar yet it could’ve been better. Tighter timings wasn’t possible on our kit which would’ve been much preferred for me instead of pushing the clocks higher but surprisingly the kit did hold up well. There’s some decent headroom in there to go from DDR4-3200 to DDR4-3600 but timings were a bit too relaxed for my tastes as well. Out of the box though, the sticks perform well for most systems and having options up DDR4-3466 should satisfy performance seekers.
The build quality is excellent and KINGMAX has certainly outdone themselves with the ZEUS DRAGON RGB. The metal heatspreader and lightbar are well made. It’s not really an issue, but I do feel the light bar hotspots would’ve been better diffused but lights are pretty as they are.
Overall, if you’re looking for a decent set of RGB memory sticks, the KINGMAX ZEUS DRAGON RGB DDR4 memory are great choices. Good build quality, good light implementation and decent performance give it a nice chance in the RGB memory space which is so fierce right now.
KINGMAX backs the ZEUS DRAGON RGB with a 5-year warranty. We give it our B2G Recommended Seal!
