As expansive as their port folio of flash drives is, Kingston has been reserving their HyperX branding for their highest performing products. Such products like the original Data Travelerรย HyperX USB3.0 flash drive feature incredible build quality and spectacular performance and with the arrival of the DataTraveler HyperX Predator, capacities of 1TB were achieved together with speeds that pushes the limits of the USB3.0 architecture.
Kingston is now heavily using its HyperX branding as a stand-alone sub-brand and with that comes the advent of new products especially for the mainstream. For the flash drive category, we finally get the mainstream entry for the HyperX lineup with the FURY USB3.0 flash drive. Available in 16GB up to 64GB capacities, the HyperX FURY USB3.0 boasts a 90/30MBs read/write spec in USB3.0 mode. Let’s take a closer look at this new flash drive and see what we can expect from the new HyperX big boy.
Features
- Impressive speeds of 90MB/s read and 30MB/s write (in USB 3.0)
- Capacities from 16GB to 64GB
- USB 3.0
- Co-logo available
Closer Look
Those familiar with HyperX products would know what to expect in terms of packaging from the new lineup. Similar to the FURY SSD, the FURY USB features a dark out packaging with a the product name highlight in the center of the cardboard. The back of the packaging highlights some of the features but isn’t littered in details as some other products before it. The Kingston 5 year warranty seal is stamped on lower-corner of the front.
The HyperX Fury USB features a heavily stylized body with tribal-inspired lines streaking through the many body. It comes in 3 colors depending on the capacity with 16GB being red, 32GB is blue (as seen above) and 64GB in an all black body. Grooves line the narrow sides of the flash drive while a loop is present for keyrings and chains.
The main body isn’t any thicker than the usual flash drive and is actually the slimmest of all the HyperX flash drive family. One thing we have to point out is that the build quality of the HyperX FURY USB is a far cry from the seamless, premium look of its bigger brothers in the DTHX family although some models like the R500 or the latest model actually have a more improved visual appeal than the HyperX Fury’s gaping seamline and uninviting colored piece.
User Experience & Conclusion
Using ATTO Disk Benchmark to gauge the maximum potential of our HyperX Fury USB, we see that Kingston has been fairly modest again in giving their rating as we see read speeds reaching a consistent 168MB/s peak and write performance just a touch past the rated specs at 31MB/s.
Crystal DiskMark shows us a wholly different picture for write performance as we see speeds going up to 110MB/s which is definitely good to know especially for people copying large files mostly.
We’ll let you judge the speeds for yourself here in this real world copy tests.
In closing, we’d like to stress we’re not overly fond of the design as we feel Kingston would’ve easily pulled off a better looking flash drive to embody the FURY title. Still, there’s no denying that at just a bit above Kingston’s more mainstream flash drive offering, we get to enjoy performance that are simply unheard of this price range. And speaking of price, we’ve checked online and we’re seeing the HyperX Fury USB dropping in prices in some e-tailers but given its SRP its already a good deal.
The Kingston HyperX FURY USB3.0 offers performance at an affordable price range without bloating the deal with superfluous extras. It does what it does at a good price and Kingston should be proud of making the HyperX brand more accessible to the mainstream crowd.
Kingston backs the HyperX Fury USB3.0 flash drive with a lengthy 5 year warranty. We give the HyperX Fury USB3.0 flash drive our B2G Recommended Award and B2G Performance Award.
