Closer Look
The Genius SP-906BT is packaged in a clear plastic packaging that showcases the product both front and back. The SP-906BT comes in a variety of colors which can easily be seen via the package. Our sample is the relatively pricier sky blue edition with the other being the red version. In the package is the speaker itself with the pre-attached carabiner hook, a USB cable and a manual.

Checking out the SP-906BT itself, we have a disc-like speaker here with the main body wrapped in rubberized coating which gives a really premium feel to the SP-906BT. Stylized perforations give the top a good visual and the contrasting ring that leads to the hook slot gives a nice accent to the entire build.

The carabiner hook is tied to the main body via a reinforced material link. The carabiner can be removed but the link is riveted shut and is intended to endure tough conditions so its meant to stay in place.

The SP-906BT features a recess at its back where the USB port is located. The higher-version SP-906BT Plus has a 3.5mm input jack next to the USB port if you were to get that model.

Underneath the dome are the control buttons for the device with the slide switch and push buttons for the main functions of the SP-906BT. We’ll talk about controls later on.

The Genius SP-906BT comes in a variety of colors to suit your personal taste. They don’t really add anything aside from cosmetics.

User Experience & Conclusion

The Genius SP-906BT is strictly a Bluetooth-only device but thankfully Genius has also released the SP-906BT Plus which has an line-in port for direct audio output as well as improved build quality. That being said, the SP-906BT itself isn’t a cutdown version with the build quality a really stand-out trait for this product. As an outdoors-oriented device, its built to take a beating and while I won’t admit on climbing cliffs with it, I’ll point out that I did bang it around the wall just to see how much it could take. I’m happy to report that both samples are still working and they’ll take knocks and bumps no problems, slamming them on the ground might be too much but a high drop of around 10ft isn’t enough to break these speakers.
To pair with the SP-906BT, power on the device and it will immediately go into pairing mode indicated by the LED light at the back. Once paired, you’re good to go. Controls on the bottom are easy to use and intuitive when needed but in most cases, I actually just left them hanging on my bike or bag and used to phone controls mostly. There’s that occasion where you’ll be reaching for these though when you’re not holding your phone. They work and it gets pretty natural after a few presses.
Sound quality is pretty decent and for its size, the audio is pretty controlled without distortion even on high-gains. While we do feel it becomes more muffled when on full blast because of all the frequencies mushing around in such a tight chamber, its still quite clear and there’s no cracking present. What’s really remarkable is the battery life on these things and given its size, it actually has more power than it looks with a full charge (2 hours or so) lasting around 6-7 hours in our testing. Genius does rate the SP-906BT for 10 hours playtime but maybe we’re just playing ours too loud.
In conclusion, the Genius SP-906BT is a great companion if you’re an active individual that likes to experience the thrills of the outdoors but still want to be entertained with your music while you’re conquering a new mountain face or trek. The splash-proof and rugged-body is built to take a beating and at its price, its really hard to beat.
