In the survey that we conducted from December 4, 2017 to February 7, 2018, we asked our visitors what is the OS (operating system) they use on their PC.
A total of 419 respondents answered our survey and, as expected, those who only use Windows took the top spot. But what’s interesting here is the number of people who use both Linux and Windows through dual-booting. To those who do not closely follow the OS market share results of the Steam Survey, Linux market share has a declining trend and is currently at 0.41% based on the January 2018 results of the Steam Survey. The results of our own survey confirms our theory that it’s possible that the true Linux market share maybe larger than what Steam Survey currently reports. We are not saying that the Linux market share at Steam would shoot up to more than 20% if Valve adds the dual-booters population to their OS survey, but we believe that taking into account those who use both Linux and Windows through dual-booting would make the results more accurate and more meaningful especially to game developers.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in this survey. The results will guide us on improving the content we publish.
