OC’ing at a glance:Â Ivy Bridge was a very hotchip to OC when it came out and with 6 cores crammed into such a small space, the Ivy Bridge-E based 4960X presents a large obstacle for overclockers. ASUS provides a rich array of control in the BIOS for granular overclocking and tweaking and the OC panel presents a nifty tool for benchmarking but as we’ve gotten more time with the OC Panel, it became less a utility but rather a just a toy.
We have no complaints with the ASUS ROG Rampage IV Black Edition’s OC capabilities, it is largely held back by our more or less mildly overclockable chip but truth be told, we have lost any actual love for the OC Panel other than being a fan control hub and flashy display. We prefer onboard controls with instantaneous response like that of GIGABYTE’s Z87X-OC.
