TEMPERATURE & POWER CONSUMPTION
We check to see how motherboard makers tune their default BIOS settings and see how it impacts temperatures and power consumption. The system is left to idle for 30 minutes before readings are taken and load data is taken 30 minutes while Prime95 blend test is running. Power readings are taken for the entire system from the socket.
As mentioned in our previous section, Ivy Bridge E presents a large stumbling block for frequency hunters as the heavy heat output of the Ivy Bridge cores present a cooling problem for majority of enthusiast overclockers. This is simply not a chip to be cooled by any conventional method, even our heavyweight Phanteks isn’t able to take the heat. Power consumption looks great in idle but maxing out the cores shows it takes a bit of power to drive all 6 cores in full swing.
